Excellence Through High-Quality Instruction

At Thomas Edison Charter School, we believe every student deserves access to a rigorous, engaging, and supportive education. Our curriculum is built on high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) that are research-based, aligned to the Delaware Academic Standards, and designed to prepare students for success in high school, college, career, and beyond.

Through exceptional teaching, meaningful relationships, and high expectations, we empower students to become confident readers, critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and lifelong learners.

Our Academic Approach

At TECS, instruction is guided by research-based best practices and a commitment to continuous student growth. Teachers use data to personalize instruction, provide targeted interventions, and ensure every student is challenged and supported throughout their educational journey.

Our High-Quality Instructional Materials

  • English Language Arts (Grades K–5): Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)
  • English Language Arts (Grades 6–8): Amplify ELA
  • Mathematics (Grades K–8): Eureka Math²
  • Science (Grades K–8): Delaware Science Standards (NGSS-Aligned)
  • Social Studies (Grades K–8): Delaware Social Studies Standards-Aligned Curriculum
  • Hands-On STEM Learning: Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM Center

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Kindergarten–Grade 5
  • Students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 use Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), a comprehensive literacy curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading. Through explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills, students build strong decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening skills. CKLA also builds students' background knowledge through engaging units in science, history, literature, and the arts, helping students become confident readers while expanding their understanding of the world around them.
Grades 6–8
  • In middle school, students continue their literacy journey with Amplify ELA, the natural continuation of the CKLA program. Building upon the strong reading and writing foundation established in elementary school, Amplify ELA challenges students to analyze increasingly complex texts, participate in meaningful discussions, write using textual evidence, and strengthen their critical thinking and communication skills.

Together, CKLA and Amplify ELA provide a seamless Kindergarten through Grade 8 literacy experience that prepares students for success in high school and beyond.

MATHEMATICS (K-8)

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 use Eureka Math², a nationally recognized mathematics curriculum that emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world problem solving.

Students learn to:

  • Develop strong number sense
  • Explain and defend mathematical thinking
  • Solve challenging problems
  • Apply mathematics in real-world situations
  • Build perseverance and confidence as mathematicians

SCIENCE (K-8)

Our science program is aligned with the Delaware Science Standards, which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Students engage in hands-on investigations, engineering design challenges, and inquiry-based learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Through the study of life, earth, and physical sciences, students learn to ask questions, analyze evidence, solve problems, and apply scientific thinking to understand the world around them.

SOCIAL STUDIES (K-8)

Our social studies program is aligned with the Delaware Social Studies Standards, helping students develop a strong understanding of history, civics, economics, and geography.

Students examine primary and secondary sources, analyze multiple perspectives, participate in meaningful discussions, and make connections between historical events and current issues. Through inquiry-based learning, students build the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and civic responsibility needed to become informed and engaged citizens.

STEM EDUCATION

Innovation and hands-on learning are an important part of the student experience at Thomas Edison Charter School.

Students have access to our Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM Center, made possible through the generous partnership of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, Exelon Foundation, and Delmarva Power.

Our STEM Center provides students with opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through engaging, hands-on experiences that extend learning beyond the traditional classroom. Students design, build, test, create, and solve authentic problems while developing creativity, collaboration, innovation, and engineering design skills that prepare them for the future.

In addition to the core subjects we offer instruction in: Art, Music, Technology, Library, and Physical Education.

Science of Reading

Our elementary literacy instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading, ensuring students receive explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and language comprehension.

Special Education

At Thomas Edison Charter School, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential. Our Special Education program provides individualized services and supports for students who qualify for specially designed instruction under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment where students receive the personalized instruction, accommodations, and support they need to be successful academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our multidisciplinary team—including special education teachers, general education teachers, related service providers, school psychologists, administrators, and families—works together to identify each student's strengths and individual needs. Using student data, classroom observations, and ongoing progress monitoring, our team develops and implements individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to help students achieve meaningful growth while accessing the general education curriculum to the greatest extent appropriate.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

Using a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), teachers regularly monitor student progress, analyze academic data, and provide targeted interventions based on individual student needs. This proactive approach helps every student receive the right support at the right time while continuing to grow academically.

At Thomas Edison Charter School, we are committed to developing knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident learners who are prepared to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Through high-quality curriculum, innovative learning experiences, dedicated educators, and a supportive school community, our students graduate with the academic foundation, character, and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in high school, college, careers, and life.
